Microdrama App Development
Last reviewed
A microdrama app streams scripted, vertical short series: episodes of one to three minutes, watched back to back, with the first few free and the rest unlocked with coins or a subscription. The hard parts are starting every episode the instant the viewer swipes, and charging for the next one without breaking the binge.
Apexnova builds custom microdrama apps you own outright, on Android, iOS and web, delivered in 30 days with no revenue share or per-subscriber fees. We built Binj TV, a microdrama app rated 4.97★ on Google Play with 200k+ installs.
What a microdrama app needs
Instant next-episode playback. The swipe is the product. The previous episode stays loaded in case the viewer swipes back, the current one plays, and the next one is already buffered. Every other player is released, so memory stays flat on episode 3 or episode 53.
Hands-free binges. When an episode ends, the app moves to the next one by itself, so a whole series plays without a tap.
A paywall over the player. The unlock appears on top of the episode, not on a separate screen, so the viewer stays in the story while they pay.
A coin wallet on the server. Balances and unlocks live in the backend, so they match on every phone and on the web, and nothing is unlocked until the server confirms the payment.
Pricing you can change without a release. Plans, the default selection, the paywall layout and its copy are configuration the backend sends, so you can test pricing in an afternoon instead of a release cycle.
Ads that open the right series. Deep links carry the series from the ad through the app store, so a new viewer lands on the show they tapped, and funnel events tell Meta and Google which campaigns bring paying viewers.
Proof: how we built Binj TV
We also built Scroll TV, which runs microdramas alongside movies, web series, reels and music in one app.
Microdrama vs short video vs long-form OTT
Microdrama sits between a TikTok-style feed and a classic streaming catalogue, and it needs its own engineering.
| Aspect | Microdrama | Short video | Long-form OTT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content | Scripted series, 1–3 min episodes | User-generated clips | Movies and full-length series |
| Viewing | In order, binge in one sitting | Algorithmic feed | Browse, search, rows |
| Money | Coin unlocks, subscriptions | Ads, tipping, creator payouts | Subscriptions, rentals, ads |
| Critical moment | The swipe to the next episode | The next clip in the feed | Start-up and buffering |

Frequently asked questions
What is microdrama app development?
Microdrama app development is building an app for scripted, vertical short series, where episodes run one to three minutes and the first few are free. The app needs a swipe-to-next episode player, a paywall that unlocks episodes with coins or a subscription, and a backend that holds the wallet and the catalogue. Apexnova builds custom microdrama apps on Android, iOS and web, production-ready in about 30 days.
Have you built a microdrama app before?
Yes. Apexnova built Binj TV end to end: the Android, iOS and web apps and the backend. It has a 4.97★ rating on Google Play from 1.28k reviews and 200k+ installs. The full engineering story is in the Binj TV case study.
How do microdrama apps make money?
Most combine free opening episodes with per-episode coin unlocks and subscription plans, and some add ads. We build the coin wallet, unlock rules and plans on the server, so you can change prices, plans and the paywall layout without shipping an app update.
How is a microdrama app different from a short-video app?
A short-video app is a TikTok-style feed of user-generated clips ranked by an algorithm. A microdrama app is a catalogue of scripted series watched in order, so the engineering focus is instant next-episode playback, binge flow and a paywall that sits over the player, not a ranking engine for user uploads.
Do we own the app and the code?
Yes. You own the source code, the store listings, the cloud accounts and your viewer data. Apexnova charges a one-time project fee, with no revenue share and no per-subscriber fees.
